I was chatting with a colleague about home screen layout and the thought process behind setting it up to ones liking. This notion gave rise to the creation of this new website. The problem with the iPhone home screen is that you only have the grid of icons, nothing else; no widgets, no option where to put the icons, nothing!

So.

The placement of individual app icons and the choice of wallpaper is the only options you have for customisation. This is why I’ve spent too many hours pondering the perfect layout and app selection for the first home screen. The fact that many apps nowadays allow the user to select among a set of icons made this job both easier and harder: Easier because I was able to find more matching icons, but harder since there simply are more choices.

Let’s start from the beginning, here is a screenshot of my current home screen:

The wallpaper is from IconFactory (support them on their Patreon page, they are a bunch of really nice people) and it fits the icons really well because of the colours. The illustration is from their celebration of the 40th anniversary of the movie Alien.

Each line of icons is colour coordinated – the layout is way more complex than that, but lets keep things simple to get us started:

• First and second row – Blue icons with white details.
• Third row – Blue icons with black and white details.
• Fourth row – White icons with multiple colours, gradients, rainbow-ish.
• Fifth row – White icons with red or orange details.
• Sixth row – Rainbow-like icons, multiple colours but in matching hues.
• Dock – Pink icons with white-ish details.

Now follows the more fun part, why the icons are arranged as they are. Brace yourself, this might get very detailed.

• Dock – Icons I love seeing, they all make me smile. Furthermore, these apps I use really often, which means I always want them close at hand. Apollo is the best reddit client for iOS, Firefox Focus is great for looking up things quickly, and Twitterrific is simply the best Twitter client out there.
• Rightmost column – The apps I use most often apart from those in the dock. Easiest to reach since I’m right-handed. Pinner is the best app for Pinboard bookmark management, I use Signal to communicate with my wife and friends, Things keep me organised, as does Fantastical. For banking I use ICA Banken and for my general Internet browsing needs, I run Firefox.
• First row – Netatmo and Carrot are both weather apps and deal with maps. Flightradar24 also deals with maps, hence they fit together.
• Second row – Signal and Mattermost are used for communication/chat. In Mattermost I have a RSS channel, and since Reeder is an RSS reader, it’s logical to put it next to Mattermost.
• Third row – Airmail is also for communication (even though I read more emails than I send), therefore it fits well below Mattermost. Email often end up adding something to my todo list, so having Things next to Airmail fits perfectly.
• Third and forth row – Scheduling tasks and events go hand in hand, why Things and Fantastical simply need to be near each other, but never on the same row due to very clashing icon colour schemes.
• Forth and fifth row – Musik (Music in Swedish) and Storytel both pleases my ears with music and audiobooks, so they belong together. However, since they have different colour schemes, they cannot be on the same row. The same is true for Prompt and easyNag. With them, I managed my servers and Raspberry Pis, meaning they also should be close to one another, but not row-wise.
• Fifth row – Both V for Wiki and Storytel allow for reading (Wikipedia and ebooks respectively), so they need to be next to one another.
• Sixth row – Camera-focused apps (see what I did there?) – apart from Firefox, however Firefox fits in well because of the colour scheme of its icon. The photo apps go from right to left; capture (Camera+ 2), edit (Darkroom), and share (Instagram), which suits my hand better and also looks better. Reversing the order would make the row look worse.

The four remaining icons are all tools in one way or another, and they should therefore be close; Drafts, 1Password, PCalc, and Bilder (Pictures in Swedish).

Oh my, that’s a proper mess, isn’t it? But I guess that’s the way my mind works. And by the way, I don’t think that I have proper OCD, but this image points at the opposite.

So. The first blog entry on this new blog – a fresh start (I hope).

I must say I’m almost excited about this! Have been having a bunch of different blogs over the years but they’ve always gone stale after a while. But this time I feel that I have some focus at least – app reviews and tips ‘n tricks concerning iOS and macOS apps!

I realised when speaking to a colleague that I spent way to much time on setting up my home screen on my phone and should write something about that – so here we are.

On this website you also find my different collections, I just have to fix a few layout issues with them (I’ve migrated them from another website).

The following text is from my old blog which I wrote in Swedish. Since this lady is way to lazy to translate old stuff, I below present the original text in its original language.

Det har nog inte gått någon förbi att jag skriver låtar. Som låtskrivare hämtar man alltid inspiration från livet i stort, händelser som rört dig som person och givetvis från annan musik. Det är omöjligt att blunda för influenser, de finns där alltid. Alla som sysslar med att skriva musik drömmer om att få till den där perfekta låten, men ytterst få lyckas. Antingen saknas engagemantet, kunskapen, känslan eller något annat som verkligen krävs för att lyckas få alla bitar att falla på plats. Självklart drömmer även jag om att få ihop den perfekta låten som tilltalar tusentals och blir en odödlig hit. Om det händer någon gång i framtiden är omöjligt att sia om, så den som lever får se.

Trots att det härligaste som finns är att få ihop en egen komposition går det inte att komma ifrån att det aldrig är fel att försöka ta en befintlig låt och göra till ”sin egen”. Givetvis pratar jag om covers. Covern är verkligen inte död och det är definitivt inte bara det lokala bandet på after-skin som ägnar sig åt att framföra dessa. Det behöver inte vara brist på egen inspiration eller en ovilja att skriva eget material som gör att man kör på den ”enkla lösningen” i att låna en gammal hit och spela in den på nytt. Se bara på Så Mycket Bättre – mer folkkär coverkavalkad får man leta efter!

Nåväl, vart är jag påväg med detta resonemang?

Jo, såhär är det. Alla låtar går inte att göra covers på! När jag och Sara satt i bilen idag dundrade en specifik låt igång och jag började fundera. Där föddes idéen till detta blogginlägg. Vissa låtar, de är så briljanta – så fulländade – att alla försök att göra dem till sina egna är meningslösa. Vad du än gör är det omöjligt att göra låten rättvisa. Det är fullständigt omöjligt att förbättra dem.

När en cover ska göras är det viktigt att man frågar sig själv ”är det värt att försöka”? ”Har jag något att tillägga?”

Oftast är svaret JA på frågorna ovan.

Men det finns alltså undantag.

Låten jag skriver om är alltså följande:

Låten The Show Must Go On av Queen från 1991 är enligt min åsikt fulländad. Ingen annan kan framföra den som Freddie Mercury. Absolut ingen.

Detta var den sista låten Freddie Mercury skrev innan han tragiskt gick bort i AIDS. Visst, Brian May gjorde grovjobbet med skrivandet av låten, men han skrev texten tillsammans med Mercury. Låten handlar om kampen mot den dödliga sjukdomen, hur livet för de andra (läs alla andra) går vidare även efter Mercury gått bort. Att all sång som han lade på sången (inte under-/överstämmor givetvis) dessutom lades i en enda tagning innan vilken Mercury svept en fyra vodka blev så klockren är ett bevis på hans enorma talang. Det sägs att han, innan han klev upp till mikrofonen sa

I’ll fucking do it, darling!

Och det gjorde han verkligen, han satte den.

I mina ögon (och öron) är The Show Must Go On en av världens mest fulländade låtar, som jag givetvis skulle vilja göra en cover på.

Men det kommer jag inte göra.

Aldrig. Någonsin.

Låten är för bra för mig, för någon annan.

Med dessa ord avslutar jag detta blogginlägg. Lyssna på låten en gång till, och känn in känslan av att veta att det är slut, att livet är över men ändå ge allt. För det är inte över, det tar aldrig slut. Så länge andra människor finns kvar och minns, så finns det inget slut.
